While learning Rhino3d (be gentle it's been 3 days), I decided I might as well try to design something that might actually be useful.
I was thinking about the low profile holdowns or clamps today. I don't know why it was stuck in my head. I have been a woodworker for a while and 'bench dogs' came to mind. This is what I came up with.
It's not to scale because I ran out of time.
The two 'dogs' are just dropped in the holes. The 'toes' are supposed to be 1/4 inch thick and overhang by 1/4 inch. The 'clamps' are dropped in the holes and rotated to snug the workpiece up to the dogs. If the holes are tight enough, it should hold the piece nicely. The thickness of the clamps is supposed to be 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick. I intentionally left one of the clamps lifted out of the hole to show the dowel / rod on the bottom.
For my first model, what do you think? For my hold down clamps, what do you think? Ok, I'm done. hahaha If it's a good idea, make sure you mention me when you're showing them off. hahaha

Another angle. I raised up the clamps and dogs.

Nice work!
If youre into nurbs modeling, have a look at Rhino's lighter, more agile brother, Moi. http://moi3d.com/ It was created by the same guy that wrote Rhino, in the early 1990's. Said guy is off on his own now, so I like to promote him because his program rocks.
The sweet thing about MoI, other that its so flippin easy to use, is that you can copy and paste freely between Rhino and Moi.
I used it to create the latest pictures of the WD here http://romaxxcnc.proboards59.com/index.c....play&thread=141
Here is what modeling looks like in MoI:

Nick, I saw your renderings on the Moi3d web site. I agree, it's an awesome package. Especially for the price. If I find that Rhino is too much for me, I may plunk down the $200 and get it.
If you don't mind a question, what did you use to render the final images of the WD? I am loving 3d modeling!
Here's a CAD/Cam question. Are there bit, toolpath tricks for cutting say a rabbit or dado around the side of a workpiece. Say, to put a groove on the outter part of a cylinder or cube but part way down the piece?
Thanks, Matt

Nick
I was wondering how you did the nice pictures of the machines you posted. I tried Moi about a year ago when he had the beta available. It did seem easy to learn, or I should say easier than some of the other 3d software I had demoed and given up on.
I was thinking this might be a way to do 3d and then load into into Cut3d and slice it to cut a 3d profile. Would cost much less this way than going with Aspire. I looked at the file formats that Cut3d and Moi supports and I “think” it would work. What's your opinion?

Hey guys,
We're a dealer for Moi now too if anyone is interested. I've been using it and love it. Powerful easy to use program.

Looks like Cut3d can import 4 formats that MoI can create. I havent tried Cut3d myself, but I'd say the chances are pretty good that it can.

Render: Vray for Rhino by Asgvis. 30 day demo on their site. its a plugin for Rhino.
CAD/Cam question: Whadda mean, like following the profile of an already cut piece and dadoing that? Personally, I dont think the cnc machine is good for everything. Once you get a blank roughed out, I take it to the shaper or router table to do the rest (in your case, a dado cutter with a 'rub ring' or bearing). The gantry router is just 1 tool in a up to a 20 different tool workflow, IMO. I dont put anything but endmills or ballnose or v cutters in the cnc machine. I hate to beat up on the Romaxx, because I'd rather a router table take the abuse and leave the delicate work for cnc.

No, I totally agree. I see folks doing guitar bodies and getting the really nice chamfered edges and stuff. I have a 3.25 hp Freud plunge router (aka The Hoss) that is going to go in a really nice router table. A table I intend to make parts for from my machine. I tell you what, waiting for this is killing me. I so badly want to ask Ron "Hey are we on schedule" but I resist. Afterall, answering me might be a spare second spent on my machine!
Ron, do you guys get a deal on the MOI software? I downloaded the trial version but haven't checked it out yet.
What bits do you use in your Romaxx?
I would love to see pictures of the Romaxx communities work. Other than George. I have seen a ton of his! hahaha No offense George. I know you got some good stuff. haha
Or how about some pictures of the Romaxx assembly operation? wink, wink!

George, Nick,
Yes Moi models can be taken right into Cut3D in STL format. Works very well.
