I have a chance to get my hands on some Black Walnut. I've never had any in the past and was wondering if it would be good wood to use to make signs and carvings. I understand it is very hard wood. Any comments would be greatly appreciated?

I never cut Black Walnut but if you like the look and have an idea that it would work for, I would get it. Especially if it's free or you get a good price on it. Until I got my HS1 I never realized just how much nice wood cost.
Note: Original post gave impression to never cut black walnut, what I meant to say is "I never cut black walnut".
Thanks Jim for the heads up.

I cut more walnut than just about anything else. It carves great and gives a smooth surface (not much sanding required). Black walnut is rated as very durable in terms of decay resistance.
