Courtesy of Ronʻs new webstore, I just made a few changes to my 10+ year old WD-1. Mainly upgrade to the “new” Z axis stabilizer and a Dewalt 611 mount so I can move over from Colt.
The Z stabilizer goes on pretty easily. Two bolts on Z and two screws on the X nut. Tweak the wheels til they snug the rail. The Dewalt mount was two band so I mounted it and slid the router in. I bottomed the yellow case on the top band. Lots of clearance below the bottom band for changing bits,etc...
I mostly cut shallow grooves in hardwoods...a lot. Once in a great while, Iʻll make something else out of plywood, koa or whatever handy. I needed to upgrade my dust shoe for the Dewalt and had some 3/8” acrylic handy. The last one was 1/2” plywood. Pretty basic. A shoe with a brush ring and two holes. But cutting the acrylic was interesting. With a new 3 flute, 1/8” router bit at full rpm, .03” depth, 25 ipm, the router started shuddering in the Y direction. My hand on the body stopped it and I dropped the speed to 12 ipm. Better... but not pretty. It tried that just after every plunge. Changed the depth to .016”. Better. I got through the part. New behavior for me but also new router and machine parts.
I bumped the router up so the body is centered in the bands. Cutting the same part in plywood, no problems with the same bit and twice the feed rate and plunge depth. I cut some circles in acrylic. Not as much amplititude shuddering but still present. Too agressive with my feed and speed for that bit?? I donʻt cut acrylic often.
