I'm new to CNC (my machine should be delivered soon) and am going to purchase some router bits to get me started. My question is about ball nose bits.
I see advertisements for core box nose, round nose, and ball nose end mills. I'm finding these terms confusing and wondering if they are all the same or if there is a difference in them. I don't want to purchase the wrong ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From the quick look on the internet it looks to me like core box nose and round nose are woodworking bits and a ball nose end mill bit is what I thank of as a milling bit that you could use cutting metal.
All my end mills and ball nose bits are the type normally used for milling metal but they work great on wood. All my bits are 1/4 or 1/8 shank size which I can find much cheaper than bits used only for wood.

Lameiii, I’m still playing with different bits so I’m not at all an expert but I’ll share my experience to date. For starter bits I would buy some inexpensive end mills in several sizes. I bought 1/8,3/16, and ¼ diameter spirals. I bought several from 2L Inc: www.2linc.com/tools_endmills.htmThey are very reasonable and you won’t hate yourself quite as much when you accidently snap one off, which you will do. I also bought a couple of ball nose bits for fluting and 3d (which I haven’t attempted yet.) www.2linc.com/tools_endmills_ballnose.htm I also have bought several v-grove bits in 60 and 90 degree for engraving, v-grooving and putting a beveled profile on finished pieces. Jim suggested 2linc to me and I got very good service. The gal on the phone was very helpful. She even called me back with more info...so, great customer service. Thanks, Jim.
I haven't been able to try them out yet as my new computer was DOA. The new one is expected on Wednesday. My CNC is sitting in the shop and is oh so pretty. Can't wait.....very excited!!
