I've been running a 5.5HP Shopvac with a Hepa filter in line with a 5 gallon cyclone type dust sorter for a few years now. Seems to work.. I empty a few gallons of "dust" out of the bucket every couple of days and knock the dust off the HEPA occasionally. The inside of the Shopvac stays pretty clean.
Unfortunately, the weak point seems to be the Shopvac. I get about 1 year out of them before the magic smoke comes out and they stop working. I suspect that they are really not made to run for 8-10 hours a day for weeks. Any good experiences with other vacs?

Hi Greg, For a more long term solution, I would have a look at something like this. A commercial type dust collector. www.grizzly.com/products/1-HP-Dust-Collector/G8027For the price of two shopvacs. If that motor goes, get a Dayton, Marathon or similar and put on it. Would last a long time. -Ron

I get about 1 year out of them before the magic smoke comes out and they stop working. Do you have ground wires on the plastic hose? It's possible that static is discharging through the ShopVac and shortening it's life.

Thanks Ron.. I've looked at that one a few times but with shipping, it's more like 3-4 shopvacs ( the point I'm at now ). Also since my WD1 is next to the bed, room decor is a consideration.. :-) Guess it's time to get serious...
